CNOOC (HKG:883) Shareholders Will Want The ROCE Trajectory To Continue
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at CNOOC (HKG:883) so let's look a bit deeper.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on CNOOC is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = CN¥185b ÷ (CN¥1.1t - CN¥125b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
Thus, CNOOC has an ROCE of 19%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 6.5% generated by the Oil and Gas industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
CNOOC is displaying some positive trends. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 19%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 49%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at CNOOC thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
The Bottom Line
To sum it up, CNOOC has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Since the stock has returned a staggering 219% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if CNOOC can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
