Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So when we looked at Yankuang Energy Group (HKG:1171) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Yankuang Energy Group, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.16 = CN¥35b ÷ (CN¥338b - CN¥120b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).

Therefore, Yankuang Energy Group has an ROCE of 16%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Oil and Gas industry average of 6.3% it's much better.
