Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like TradeGo FinTech (HKG:8017), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

TradeGo FinTech's Improving Profits

In the last three years TradeGo FinTech's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. It's good to see that TradeGo FinTech's EPS have grown from HK$0.03 to HK$0.035 over twelve months. That's a 18% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). TradeGo FinTech shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 22% to 31%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Since TradeGo FinTech is no giant, with a market capitalization of HK$456m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are TradeGo FinTech Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that TradeGo FinTech insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Indeed, they hold HK$117m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. That amounts to 26% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like TradeGo FinTech with market caps under HK$1.6b is about HK$1.8m.

TradeGo FinTech offered total compensation worth HK$927k to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Is TradeGo FinTech Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, TradeGo FinTech is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for TradeGo FinTech, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for TradeGo FinTech that you need to be mindful of.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
