Here's Why I Think Convenience Retail Asia (HKG:831) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Convenience Retail Asia (HKG:831), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Convenience Retail Asia Increasing Earnings Per Share?
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. We can see that in the last three years Convenience Retail Asia grew its EPS by 12% per year. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Convenience Retail Asia maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 6.2% to HK$5.8b. That's progress.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Convenience Retail Asia's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are Convenience Retail Asia Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Convenience Retail Asia shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have HK$130m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 3.5% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Should You Add Convenience Retail Asia To Your Watchlist?
As I already mentioned, Convenience Retail Asia is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 1 warning sign for Convenience Retail Asia you should be aware of.
