Laopu Gold (HKG:6181) Posted Healthy Earnings But There Are Some Other Factors To Be Aware Of
Despite posting some strong earnings, the market for Laopu Gold Co., Ltd.'s (HKG:6181) stock hasn't moved much. Our analysis suggests that this might be because shareholders have noticed some concerning underlying factors.
Examining Cashflow Against Laopu Gold's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to June 2025, Laopu Gold recorded an accrual ratio of 1.28. Statistically speaking, that's a real negative for future earnings. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of CN¥3.6b despite its profit of CN¥3.15b, mentioned above. We also note that Laopu Gold's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of CN¥3.6b.

Our Take On Laopu Gold's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, we think Laopu Gold's earnings were not supported by free cash flow, which might concern some investors. For this reason, we think that Laopu Gold's statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. But on the bright side, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks.
