Should You Be Adding Li Ning (HKG:2331) To Your Watchlist Today?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Li Ning (HKG:2331). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Li Ning Growing?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Li Ning has grown EPS by 52% per year, over the last three years. That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. The good news is that Li Ning is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.9 percentage points to 12%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Li Ning Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a HK$114b company like Li Ning. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. To be specific, they have CN¥94m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 0.08% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Does Li Ning Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Li Ning's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Li Ning for a spot on your watchlist. We should say that we've discovered 3 warning signs for Li Ning that you should be aware of before investing here.
