Shenzhou International Group Holdings (HKG:2313) Will Pay A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
Shenzhou International Group Holdings Limited (HKG:2313) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to CN¥0.95 on the 28th of September. Despite the cut, the dividend yield of 2.2% will still be comparable to other companies in the industry.

Shenzhou International Group Holdings' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Shenzhou International Group Holdings' earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 94.9%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CN¥0.389 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of CN¥1.67. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 16% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Unfortunately, Shenzhou International Group Holdings' earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year. Growth of 0.8% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. While this isn't necessarily a negative, it definitely signals that dividend growth could be constrained in the future unless earnings start to pick up again.
Our Thoughts On Shenzhou International Group Holdings' Dividend
Overall, we think that Shenzhou International Group Holdings could make a reasonable income stock, even though it did cut the dividend this year. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
