Fosun International's Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Fosun International is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 28.2% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 21%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from CN¥0.13 in 2012 to the most recent annual payment of CN¥0.24. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 6.8% per annum over that time. We have seen cuts in the past, so while the growth looks promising we would be a little bit cautious about its track record.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Fosun International hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years. While growth may be thin on the ground, Fosun International could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.
Our Thoughts On Fosun International's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Fosun International is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 2 warning signs for Fosun International that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
