The board of L.K. Technology Holdings Limited (HKG:558) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of HK$0.05 on the 2nd of October, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the annual payment to 2.9% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

L.K. Technology Holdings' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, L.K. Technology Holdings was paying only paying out a fraction of earnings, but the payment was a massive 207% of cash flows. While the business may be attempting to set a balanced dividend policy, a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 48.8%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 19% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
L.K. Technology Holdings' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
L.K. Technology Holdings has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. Since 2016, the annual payment back then was HK$0.0327, compared to the most recent full-year payment of HK$0.10. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 15% a year over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. L.K. Technology Holdings has impressed us by growing EPS at 21% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
Our Thoughts On L.K. Technology Holdings' Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think L.K. Technology Holdings' payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
