Returns On Capital At China State Construction International Holdings (HKG:3311) Have Hit The Brakes
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over China State Construction International Holdings' (HKG:3311) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on China State Construction International Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.10 = HK$13b ÷ (HK$237b - HK$109b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Therefore, China State Construction International Holdings has an ROCE of 10%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 6.7% generated by the Construction industry.

In the above chart we have measured China State Construction International Holdings' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
So How Is China State Construction International Holdings' ROCE Trending?
While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. The company has consistently earned 10% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 60% in that time. 10% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that China State Construction International Holdings has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
Another thing to note, China State Construction International Holdings has a high ratio of current liabilities to total assets of 46%. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
What We Can Learn From China State Construction International Holdings' ROCE
The main thing to remember is that China State Construction International Holdings has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 86% to shareholders over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
China State Construction International Holdings does come with some risks though, we found 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those can't be ignored...
