Organization of Football Prognostics' (ATH:OPAP) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
The board of Organization of Football Prognostics S.A. (ATH:OPAP) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €0.30 on the 9th of November, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 6.4% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Organization of Football Prognostics Doesn't Earn Enough To Cover Its Payments
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. The last payment made up 80% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 23.2%. However, if the dividend continues along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio reaching 147% over the next year.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €1.22 in 2012 to the most recent total annual payment of €0.80. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 4.1% per year. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Organization of Football Prognostics Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Organization of Football Prognostics has impressed us by growing EPS at 18% per year over the past five years. EPS has been growing at a reasonable rate, although with most of the profits being paid out to shareholders, growth prospects could be more limited in the future.
Our Thoughts On Organization of Football Prognostics' Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Organization of Football Prognostics' payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think Organization of Football Prognostics is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 2 warning signs for Organization of Football Prognostics that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
