What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Piraeus Bank?

Institutions typically measure themselves against a benchmark when reporting to their own investors, so they often become more enthusiastic about a stock once it's included in a major index. We would expect most companies to have some institutions on the register, especially if they are growing.

As you can see, institutional investors have a fair amount of stake in Piraeus Bank. This can indicate that the company has a certain degree of credibility in the investment community. Many look for medium term catalysts that will drive the share price higher. The company's largest shareholder is Hellenic Financial Stability Fund, with ownership of 26%. Paulson & Co. Inc. is the second largest shareholder owning 9.1% of common stock, and Aristotelis Mistakidis holds about 5.1% of the company stock.

We also observed that the top 6 shareholders account for more than half of the share register, with a few smaller shareholders to balance the interests of the larger ones to a certain extent.

Researching institutional ownership is a good way to gauge and filter a stock's expected performance. The same can be achieved by studying analyst sentiments. There are a reasonable number of analysts covering the stock, so it might be useful to find out their aggregate view on the future.

While the precise definition of an insider can be subjective, almost everyone considers board members to be insiders. Management ultimately answers to the board. However, it is not uncommon for managers to be executive board members, especially if they are a founder or the CEO.
