Possible Bearish Signals With Severn Trent Insiders Disposing Stock
Many Severn Trent PLC (LON:SVT) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Severn Trent Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The CFO & Executive Director, Helen Miles, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£501k worth of shares at a price of UK£27.14 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (UK£27.83). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 24% of Helen Miles's stake.
Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid UK£95k for 3.60k shares. But they sold 50.15k shares for UK£1.4m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Severn Trent shares, than buying. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Severn Trent insiders own 0.2% of the company, worth about UK£15m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Severn Trent Tell Us?
The recent insider purchases are heartening. However, the longer term transactions are not so encouraging.
