Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Zigup (LON:ZIG)
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at Zigup (LON:ZIG) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Zigup, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.083 = UK£157m ÷ (UK£2.3b - UK£439m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to April 2025).
Therefore, Zigup has an ROCE of 8.3%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 7.9%, it's still a low return by itself.

What Can We Tell From Zigup's ROCE Trend?
While in absolute terms it isn't a high ROCE, it's promising to see that it has been moving in the right direction. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 8.3%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 29% more capital is being employed now too. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
Our Take On Zigup's ROCE
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what Zigup has. And a remarkable 113% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
One more thing: We've identified 3 warning signs with Zigup (at least 1 which is concerning) , and understanding these would certainly be useful.
