SysGroup plc's (LON:SYS) 28% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the SysGroup plc (LON:SYS) share price has dived 28% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 43% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think SysGroup's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United Kingdom's IT industry is similar at about 1.2x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does SysGroup's Recent Performance Look Like?

SysGroup certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to deteriorate like the rest, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think SysGroup's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, SysGroup would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 4.9%. The latest three year period has also seen a 25% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 9.7% during the coming year according to the lone analyst following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 7.5%.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that SysGroup's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.

The Final Word

Following SysGroup's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

While SysGroup's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.

Having said that, be aware SysGroup is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit concerning.
