Did Business Growth Power First Derivatives' (LON:FDP) Share Price Gain of 101%?

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. Long term First Derivatives plc (LON:FDP) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 101% in five years. Unfortunately, though, the stock has dropped 8.2% over a week.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

First Derivatives' earnings per share are down 6.6% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

In contrast revenue growth of 17% per year is probably viewed as evidence that First Derivatives is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between First Derivatives' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that First Derivatives' TSR of 107% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, First Derivatives shareholders can take comfort that their trailing twelve month loss of 1.0% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 3.7%. Of course, the long term returns are far more important and the good news is that over five years, the stock has returned 16% for each year. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that First Derivatives is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
