Animalcare Group's (LON:ANCR) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Animalcare Group plc (LON:ANCR) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 8th of July to UK£0.024. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 1.4% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

Animalcare Group's Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Even though Animalcare Group isn't generating a profit, it is generating healthy free cash flows that easily cover the dividend. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Looking forward, earnings per share could 61.1% over the next year if the trend of the last few years can't be broken. This means that the company won't turn a profit over the next year, but with healthy cash flows at the moment the dividend could still be okay to continue.
Animalcare Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Looking back, the company hasn't been paying the most consistent dividend, but with such a short dividend history it could be too early to draw solid conclusions. Since 2018, the dividend has gone from UK£0.04 to UK£0.048. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 4.7% over that duration. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Animalcare Group's earnings per share has shrunk at 61% a year over the past five years. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future.
Animalcare Group's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
