WPP plc (LON:WPP) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 27%
The WPP plc (LON:WPP) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 69% share price decline.
Even after such a large drop in price, WPP may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United Kingdom have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 30x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, WPP would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 87% last year. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 37% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 9.3% per annum during the coming three years according to the ten analysts following the company. With the market predicted to deliver 17% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that WPP's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On WPP's P/E
Having almost fallen off a cliff, WPP's share price has pulled its P/E way down as well. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
