Some System1 Group PLC (LON:SYS1) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 25% Pounding

The System1 Group PLC (LON:SYS1) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. Longer-term shareholders would now have taken a real hit with the stock declining 3.2% in the last year.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, System1 Group may still be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.2x, since almost half of all companies in the United Kingdom have P/E ratios under 15x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Our free stock report includes 1 warning sign investors should be aware of before investing in System1 Group. Read for free now.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for System1 Group as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is System1 Group's Growth Trending?

System1 Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 155% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen a 18% overall rise in EPS, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 18% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.

In light of this, it's alarming that System1 Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From System1 Group's P/E?

System1 Group's P/E hasn't come down all the way after its stock plunged. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that System1 Group currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.

Before you settle on your opinion, we've discovered 1 warning sign for System1 Group that you should be aware of.

It's important to make sure you look for a great company, not just the first idea you come across. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with strong recent earnings growth (and a low P/E).

Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced. A business at three times leverage with nothing due until 2031 is in a completely different position from the same ratio rolling next year. Screen on weighted average maturity and the schedule behind it.
