Companies Like Itaconix (LON:ITX) Are In A Position To Invest In Growth
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Itaconix (LON:ITX) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.
Our analysis indicates that ITX is potentially overvalued!
When Might Itaconix Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Itaconix last reported its balance sheet in June 2022, it had zero debt and cash worth US$921k. In the last year, its cash burn was US$669k. Therefore, from June 2022 it had roughly 17 months of cash runway. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. Importantly, if we extrapolate recent cash burn trends, the cash runway would be noticeably longer. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Well Is Itaconix Growing?
Itaconix managed to reduce its cash burn by 71% over the last twelve months, which suggests it's on the right flight path. Pleasingly, this was achieved with the help of a 20% boost to revenue. It seems to be growing nicely. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can Itaconix Raise More Cash Easily?
Even though it seems like Itaconix is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Itaconix's cash burn of US$669k is about 2.7% of its US$25m market capitalisation. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.
How Risky Is Itaconix's Cash Burn Situation?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Itaconix's cash burn. For example, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap suggests that the company is on a good path. Its weak point is its cash runway, but even that wasn't too bad! Based on the factors mentioned in this article, we think its cash burn situation warrants some attention from shareholders, but we don't think they should be worried. Taking a deeper dive, we've spotted 4 warning signs for Itaconix you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit concerning.
