Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Goldplat PLC (LON:GDP) Even After 31% Share Price Boost

Goldplat PLC (LON:GDP) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 31% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 14% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Goldplat's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.5x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 17x and even P/E's above 29x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Goldplat as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Goldplat's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 30%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 22% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 35% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 16% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Goldplat's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Goldplat's P/E

Goldplat's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Goldplat currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Goldplat that you need to be mindful of.

Of course, you might also be able to find a better stock than Goldplat. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
