We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
So, the natural question for Eden Research (LON:EDEN) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

How Long Is Eden Research's Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. As at June 2021, Eden Research had cash of UK£5.7m and such minimal debt that we can ignore it for the purposes of this analysis. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through UK£3.1m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 22 months from June 2021. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. However, if we extrapolate the company's recent cash burn trend, then it would have a longer cash run way. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Well Is Eden Research Growing?
At first glance it's a bit worrying to see that Eden Research actually boosted its cash burn by 48%, year on year. Also concerning, operating revenue was actually down by 16% in that time. Considering both these metrics, we're a little concerned about how the company is developing. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how Eden Research is building its business over time.
Can Eden Research Raise More Cash Easily?
Even though it seems like Eden Research is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Since it has a market capitalisation of UK£21m, Eden Research's UK£3.1m in cash burn equates to about 14% of its market value. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.
So, Should We Worry About Eden Research's Cash Burn?
On this analysis of Eden Research's cash burn, we think its cash runway was reassuring, while its increasing cash burn has us a bit worried.
