Foresight Group Holdings' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 123% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 50%. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 162.0%. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 68% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.
Foresight Group Holdings Is Still Building Its Track Record
Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. Since 2021, the dividend has gone from £0.017 total annually to £0.201. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 244% over that duration. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Earnings has been rising at 2.8% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. So the company has struggled to grow its EPS yet it's still paying out 123% of its earnings. This gives limited room for the company to raise the dividend in the future.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Foresight Group Holdings' payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think Foresight Group Holdings is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
