Investors Aren't Entirely Convinced By ASA International Group PLC's (LON:ASAI) Earnings

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.8x ASA International Group PLC (LON:ASAI) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United Kingdom have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 29x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, ASA International Group's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is ASA International Group's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, ASA International Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 49% decrease to the company's bottom line. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 53% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 15% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that ASA International Group is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From ASA International Group's P/E?

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that ASA International Group currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for ASA International Group (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to be mindful of.
