The FRP Advisory Group (LON:FRP) Share Price Has Gained 33% And Shareholders Are Hoping For More
The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the FRP Advisory Group plc (LON:FRP) share price is 33% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 4.6% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! FRP Advisory Group hasn't been listed for long, so it's still not clear if it is a long term winner.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last year FRP Advisory Group grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.
The result looks like a strong improvement to us, so we're not surprised the market likes the growth. Inflection points like this can be a great time to take a closer look at a company.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, FRP Advisory Group's TSR for the last year was 36%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
FRP Advisory Group boasts a total shareholder return of 36% for the last year (that includes the dividends) . The more recent returns haven't been as impressive as the longer term returns, coming in at just 3.9%. It seems likely the market is waiting on fundamental developments with the business before pushing the share price higher (or lower). I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with FRP Advisory Group (including 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) .
