The board of Duke Royalty Limited (LON:DUKE) has announced that it will pay a dividend of £0.007 per share on the 12th of July. This means the annual payment is 8.1% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

Duke Royalty Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, Duke Royalty was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 79.8%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could reach over 200%, which could put the dividend under pressure if earnings don't start to improve.
Duke Royalty's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that Duke Royalty has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. Since 2017, the dividend has gone from £0.0196 total annually to £0.028. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 6.1% over that duration. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Duke Royalty has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 54% per annum. The company's earnings per share has grown rapidly in recent years, and it has a good balance between reinvesting and paying dividends to shareholders, so we think that Duke Royalty could prove to be a strong dividend payer.
In Summary
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think Duke Royalty is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
