Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies The Rank Group Plc (LON:RNK) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Rank Group's Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Rank Group had debt of UK£108.7m at the end of December 2021, a reduction from UK£124.5m over a year. However, it does have UK£163.5m in cash offsetting this, leading to net cash of UK£54.8m.
How Strong Is Rank Group's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Rank Group had liabilities of UK£223.3m due within 12 months, and liabilities of UK£279.9m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had UK£163.5m in cash and UK£20.4m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by UK£319.3m.
Rank Group has a market capitalization of UK£616.5m, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, Rank Group boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load! The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Rank Group's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Over 12 months, Rank Group reported revenue of UK£486m, which is a gain of 17%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. We usually like to see faster growth from unprofitable companies, but each to their own.
So How Risky Is Rank Group?
Although Rank Group had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last twelve months, it made a statutory profit of UK£34m. So taking that on face value, and considering the cash, we don't think its very risky in the near term. With revenue growth uninspiring, we'd really need to see some positive EBIT before mustering much enthusiasm for this business. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Rank Group that you should be aware of before investing here.
