Insiders At InterContinental Hotels Group Sold US$2.0m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
In the last year, many InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (LON:IHG) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At InterContinental Hotels Group
The insider, Jolyon Bulley, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£462k worth of shares at a price of UK£99.45 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (UK£85.02). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does InterContinental Hotels Group Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that InterContinental Hotels Group insiders own 0.3% of the company, worth about UK£34m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
