We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Photo-Me International plc (LON:PHTM).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

Photo-Me International Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Group CEO & Deputy Chairman Serge Crasnianski bought UK£1.9m worth of shares at a price of UK£0.53 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is UK£0.58. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. If someone buys shares at well below current prices, it's a good sign on balance, but keep in mind they may no longer see value. The good news for Photo-Me International share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.
