Software Circle (LON:SFT) pulls back 10% this week, but still delivers shareholders massive 35% CAGR over 5 years

While Software Circle plc (LON:SFT) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 25% in the last quarter. But that doesn't undermine the fantastic longer term performance (measured over five years). To be precise, the stock price is 340% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term.

While the stock has fallen 10% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

Software Circle wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

For the last half decade, Software Circle can boast revenue growth at a rate of 12% per year. That's a pretty good long term growth rate. Arguably it's more than reflected in the very strong share price gain of 34% a year over a half a decade. It might not be cheap but a (long-term) growth stock like this is usually well worth taking a closer look at.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Software Circle's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Software Circle shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 352%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Software Circle shareholders gained a total return of 4.8% during the year. But that was short of the market average. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 35% per year for five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. It is all well and good that insiders have been buying shares, but we suggest you check here to see what price insiders were buying at.
