Not Many Are Piling Into Severfield plc (LON:SFR) Stock Yet As It Plummets 32%
The Severfield plc (LON:SFR) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 32%. The recent drop has obliterated the annual return, with the share price now down 9.7% over that longer period.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Severfield may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.5x, since almost half of all companies in the United Kingdom have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 30x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Severfield hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Severfield's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 26% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 6.2% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 21% each year during the coming three years according to the six analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 14% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it odd that Severfield is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Final Word
Severfield's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Severfield's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
