Rotork's (LON:ROR) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
Rotork plc's (LON:ROR) periodic dividend will be increasing on the 22nd of September to £0.0255, with investors receiving 6.3% more than last year's £0.024. This takes the annual payment to 2.2% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Rotork's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. The last dividend was quite comfortably covered by Rotork's earnings, but it was a bit tighter on the cash flow front. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 89% indicates it is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 34.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 44% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was £0.043, compared to the most recent full-year payment of £0.067. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 4.5% over that duration. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Rotork has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 12% per annum. The company is paying a reasonable amount of earnings to shareholders, and is growing earnings at a decent rate so we think it could be a decent dividend stock.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Rotork will make a great income stock. While Rotork is earning enough to cover the dividend, we are generally unimpressed with its future prospects. We don't think Rotork is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
