QinetiQ Group's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. The last dividend was quite comfortably covered by QinetiQ Group's earnings, but it was a bit tighter on the cash flow front. The company is clearly earning enough to pay this type of dividend, but it is definitely focused on returning cash to shareholders, rather than growing the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 60.9%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 28%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
QinetiQ Group Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The annual payment during the last 10 years was £0.038 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was £0.077. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 7.3% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. QinetiQ Group has seen earnings per share falling at 3.1% per year over the last five years. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think QinetiQ Group will make a great income stock. The low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, but generally we are not too happy with the payments QinetiQ Group has been making. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
