Reflecting on Flowtech Fluidpower's (LON:FLO) Share Price Returns Over The Last Three Years

Flowtech Fluidpower plc (LON:FLO) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 32% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. In fact, the share price is down 50% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over the three years that the share price declined, Flowtech Fluidpower's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Extraordinary items contributed to this situation. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Flowtech Fluidpower's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Flowtech Fluidpower's TSR, which was a 45% drop over the last 3 years, was not as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Flowtech Fluidpower shareholders can take comfort that their trailing twelve month loss of 1.8% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 3.7%. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it's worse than the annualised loss of 1.6% over the last half decade. Whilst Baron Rothschild does tell the investor "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", buyers would need to examine the data carefully to be comfortable that the business itself is sound. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Flowtech Fluidpower you should be aware of, and 1 of them is potentially serious.
