The board of Cogelec SA (EPA:ALLEC) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 123% on the 4th of July to €0.58, up from last year's comparable payment of €0.26. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 1.2%.
Cogelec's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. However, prior to this announcement, Cogelec's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 99.6% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Cogelec Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The company has maintained a consistent dividend for a few years now, but we would like to see a longer track record before relying on it. Since 2022, the annual payment back then was €0.29, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €0.26. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 3.6% per year. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see that Cogelec has been growing its earnings per share at 69% a year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
We Really Like Cogelec's Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
