Is Now The Time To Put Dassault Systèmes (EPA:DSY) On Your Watchlist?
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Dassault Systèmes (EPA:DSY). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Dassault Systèmes Growing?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Dassault Systèmes managed to grow EPS by 8.3% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Dassault Systèmes shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 16% to 22%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Dassault Systèmes Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €67b company like Dassault Systèmes. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth €5.2b. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
Is Dassault Systèmes Worth Keeping An Eye On?
One positive for Dassault Systèmes is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Don't forget that there may still be risks. Although Dassault Systèmes certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
