Does Virbac's (EPA:VIRP) Share Price Gain of 96% Match Its Business Performance?

By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But many of us dare to dream of bigger returns, and build a portfolio ourselves. For example, the Virbac SA (EPA:VIRP) share price is up 96% in the last three years, clearly besting the market return of around 7.2% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 7.0% in the last year.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, Virbac achieved compound earnings per share growth of 27% per year. We note that the 25% yearly (average) share price gain isn't too far from the EPS growth rate. Coincidence? Probably not. That suggests that the market sentiment around the company hasn't changed much over that time. Quite to the contrary, the share price has arguably reflected the EPS growth.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Virbac shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 7.0% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 3% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Virbac better, we need to consider many other factors.
