Little Excitement Around Don't Nod Entertainment S.A.'s (EPA:ALDNE) Revenues As Shares Take 28% Pounding
The Don't Nod Entertainment S.A. (EPA:ALDNE) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 28%. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 68% loss during that time.
Following the heavy fall in price, it would be understandable if you think Don't Nod Entertainment is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.4x, considering almost half the companies in France's Entertainment industry have P/S ratios above 1.1x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Don't Nod Entertainment's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Don't Nod Entertainment has been doing a reasonable job lately as its revenue hasn't declined as much as most other companies. It might be that many expect the comparatively superior revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. In saying that, existing shareholders probably aren't pessimistic about the share price if the company's revenue continues outplaying the industry.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Don't Nod Entertainment's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 4.4%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 18% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 71% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 2.7%.
In light of this, it's understandable that Don't Nod Entertainment's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From Don't Nod Entertainment's P/S?
Don't Nod Entertainment's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
It's clear to see that Don't Nod Entertainment maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Don't Nod Entertainment's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
