Not Many Are Piling Into La Française de l'Energie S.A. (EPA:FDE) Stock Yet As It Plummets 30%
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the La Française de l'Energie S.A. (EPA:FDE) share price has dived 30% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 62% share price decline.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, La Française de l'Energie may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.4x, since almost half of all companies in France have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 25x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, La Française de l'Energie has been very sluggish. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, La Française de l'Energie would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 20%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 3,585% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 36% each year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 14% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's peculiar that La Française de l'Energie's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On La Française de l'Energie's P/E
La Française de l'Energie's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that La Française de l'Energie currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
