Investors Give CGG (EPA:CGG) Shares A 26% Hiding

CGG (EPA:CGG) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 26% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 43% in that time.

After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies operating in France's Energy Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.9x, you may consider CGG as an attractive investment with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How CGG Has Been Performing

CGG hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For CGG?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like CGG's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 4.6%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 1.5% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 11% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 10.0% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's peculiar that CGG's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On CGG's P/S

The southerly movements of CGG's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

Our examination of CGG's revealed that its P/S remains low despite analyst forecasts of revenue growth matching the wider industry. When we see middle-of-the-road revenue growth like this, we assume it must be the potential risks that are what is placing pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.

You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for CGG you should be aware of, and 1 of them makes us a bit uncomfortable.
