Accor SA (EPA:AC) Stock Rockets 26% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
Accor SA (EPA:AC) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 26% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Looking further back, the 15% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Since its price has surged higher, Accor's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in France, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 15x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Accor has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Accor's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 6.9% last year. Still, EPS has barely risen at all in aggregate from three years ago, which is not ideal. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 9.6% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 13% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's alarming that Accor's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Final Word
Accor's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Accor currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Accor that you need to be mindful of.
