Latécoère S.A.'s (EPA:LAT) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x may look like a pretty appealing investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Aerospace & Defense industry in France have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Latécoère Has Been Performing

Recent times have been advantageous for Latécoère as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Latécoère's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Latécoère's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 54% last year. Still, revenue has fallen 1.4% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 14% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 9.6%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Latécoère is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What Does Latécoère's P/S Mean For Investors?

While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

To us, it seems Latécoère currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
