It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that Figeac Aero Société Anonyme (EPA:FGA) does have debt on its balance sheet. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. How Strong Is Figeac Aero Société Anonyme's Balance Sheet?

The latest balance sheet data shows that Figeac Aero Société Anonyme had liabilities of €265.5m due within a year, and liabilities of €329.3m falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had €86.5m in cash and €63.6m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total €444.7m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

When you consider that this deficiency exceeds the company's €404.5m market capitalization, you might well be inclined to review the balance sheet intently. Hypothetically, extremely heavy dilution would be required if the company were forced to pay down its liabilities by raising capital at the current share price.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

While Figeac Aero Société Anonyme's debt to EBITDA ratio (4.7) suggests that it uses some debt, its interest cover is very weak, at 0.70, suggesting high leverage. It seems that the business incurs large depreciation and amortisation charges, so maybe its debt load is heavier than it would first appear, since EBITDA is arguably a generous measure of earnings. It seems clear that the cost of borrowing money is negatively impacting returns for shareholders, of late. Looking on the bright side, Figeac Aero Société Anonyme boosted its EBIT by a silky 45% in the last year. Looking at all the angles mentioned above, it does seem to us that Figeac Aero Société Anonyme is a somewhat risky investment as a result of its debt. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since leverage can boost returns on equity, but it is something to be aware of. Even though Figeac Aero Société Anonyme lost money on the bottom line, its positive EBIT suggests the business itself has potential.
