Cerinnov Group (EPA:ALPCV) Shareholders Will Want The ROCE Trajectory To Continue
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Cerinnov Group's (EPA:ALPCV) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Cerinnov Group, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.062 = €585k ÷ (€19m - €9.1m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Therefore, Cerinnov Group has an ROCE of 6.2%. On its own that's a low return on capital but it's in line with the industry's average returns of 6.5%.

What Can We Tell From Cerinnov Group's ROCE Trend?
We're delighted to see that Cerinnov Group is reaping rewards from its investments and has now broken into profitability. Historically the company was generating losses but as we can see from the latest figures referenced above, they're now earning 6.2% on their capital employed. Additionally, the business is utilizing 50% less capital than it was five years ago, and taken at face value, that can mean the company needs less funds at work to get a return. The reduction could indicate that the company is selling some assets, and considering returns are up, they appear to be selling the right ones.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Effectively this means that suppliers or short-term creditors are now funding 49% of the business, which is more than it was five years ago. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
The Bottom Line
In summary, it's great to see that Cerinnov Group has been able to turn things around and earn higher returns on lower amounts of capital. Given the stock has declined 47% in the last five years, this could be a good investment if the valuation and other metrics are also appealing. That being the case, research into the company's current valuation metrics and future prospects seems fitting.
