It's Down 27% But Gaussin SA (EPA:ALGAU) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Gaussin SA (EPA:ALGAU) shares are down a considerable 27% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 86% share price decline.

Since its price has dipped substantially, considering around half the companies operating in France's Machinery industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.8x, you may consider Gaussin as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Gaussin's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For example, consider that Gaussin's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Gaussin, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Gaussin's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 25% decrease to the company's top line. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. Accordingly, shareholders will be pleased, but also have some serious questions to ponder about the last 12 months.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 7.3% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Gaussin's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Gaussin's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We're very surprised to see Gaussin currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 6 warning signs with Gaussin (at least 4 which can't be ignored), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
