When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Delfingen Industry S.A. (EPA:ALDEL) share price has soared 201% return in just a single year. On top of that, the share price is up 91% in about a quarter. However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 11% in the last three years.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year, Delfingen Industry actually saw its earnings per share drop 47%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

Unfortunately Delfingen Industry's fell 9.3% over twelve months. So using a snapshot of key business metrics doesn't give us a good picture of why the market is bidding up the stock.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Delfingen Industry's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Delfingen Industry's TSR of 206% over the last year is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Delfingen Industry shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 206% over the last year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 21%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper.
