Sanoma Oyj (HEL:SANOMA) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to €0.13 on the 28th of April. This means that the annual payment will be 4.7% of the current stock price, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Sanoma Oyj's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. The last payment made up 79% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 33.8%. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 74% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from €0.60 total annually to €0.37. This works out to be a decline of approximately 4.7% per year over that time. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
Sanoma Oyj Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. We are encouraged to see that Sanoma Oyj has grown earnings per share at 18% per year over the past five years. Past earnings growth has been decent, but unless this is one of those rare businesses that can grow without additional capital investment or marketing spend, we'd generally expect the higher payout ratio to limit its future growth prospects.
Our Thoughts On Sanoma Oyj's Dividend
In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Sanoma Oyj is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
