Neste Oyj (HEL:NESTE) Will Be Hoping To Turn Its Returns On Capital Around
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at Neste Oyj (HEL:NESTE), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Neste Oyj:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = €1.7b ÷ (€16b - €3.4b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Thus, Neste Oyj has an ROCE of 13%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 15% generated by the Oil and Gas industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Neste Oyj doesn't inspire confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 13% from 19% five years ago. Given the business is employing more capital while revenue has slipped, this is a bit concerning. If this were to continue, you might be looking at a company that is trying to reinvest for growth but is actually losing market share since sales haven't increased.
The Bottom Line On Neste Oyj's ROCE
From the above analysis, we find it rather worrisome that returns on capital and sales for Neste Oyj have fallen, meanwhile the business is employing more capital than it was five years ago. And long term shareholders have watched their investments stay flat over the last five years. With underlying trends that aren't great in these areas, we'd consider looking elsewhere.
