The board of Harvia Oyj (HEL:HARVIA) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €0.32 on the 30th of October, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 2.9% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Harvia Oyj's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Harvia Oyj's earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 42.1%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 45% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Harvia Oyj Is Still Building Its Track Record

It is great to see that Harvia Oyj has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2018, the dividend has gone from €0.36 total annually to €0.64. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 12% over that duration. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Harvia Oyj has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 29% per annum. Harvia Oyj is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.

Harvia Oyj Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Harvia Oyj is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
