Slowing Rates Of Return At Etteplan Oyj (HEL:ETTE) Leave Little Room For Excitement
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Etteplan Oyj's (HEL:ETTE) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Etteplan Oyj is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = €27m ÷ (€281m - €97m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
So, Etteplan Oyj has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Professional Services industry average of 10% it's much better.

Above you can see how the current ROCE for Etteplan Oyj compares to its prior returns on capital, but there's only so much you can tell from the past. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
How Are Returns Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 95% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 15%. Since 15% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
Our Take On Etteplan Oyj's ROCE
The main thing to remember is that Etteplan Oyj has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 102% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
